That’s not to say that Bitcoin has never had difficulties. Perhaps the most notable technical glitch in its history came in 2013 when an update to the new version of Bitcoin Core software caused a fork in the block chain, where one chain broke in two. Miners who had upgraded to the new version of the software were forced to downgrade before the bug was resolved.
This raises the question of whether decentralized systems are inherently more robust than centralized ones. The argument is based on the fact that the former do not have, or at least in theory, should not have a single point of failure. However, we do not yet have enough empirical evidence to rule in favor of decentralization.
